Shalom Rockland Early Childhood Center

EARLY CHILDHOOD: A PLEASANT JOURNEY, NOT A RUSH.

At New City Jewish Center Early Childhood Center, our goal is to foster a positive feeling and a sense of confidence within each child. When a child feels positive, he/she can more easily learn and grow through our multi-faceted curriculum. Our ECC mission is to foster the learning process through the use of experiential, developmentally appropriate practices that will impact every child in a way that makes sense for him/her.

We are a developmental, play-based program, including a wide variety of educational experiences into our curriculum to accommodate all intelligences and modalities. Integrated throughout our program are cognitive skills in language arts, math, science and social studies,   as well as instilling a love of Jewish life, culture and ritual. Along with these we incorporate music, yoga, sports, outdoor education and Hebrew Through Movement. One of our main goals is to help the children to be able to function and thrive in the larger world. Our emphasis on socialization, cooperation, being able to negotiate and compromise, to understand and empathize with others’ feelings and to get along with others while remaining true to oneself, is one of the hallmarks of our school.

Our teachers encourage and guide the children socially, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually and physically, in a nurturing environment filled with love, acceptance, laughter and understanding. We are one of the few licensed preschools in Rockland County and open to the entire community. Each member of our staff is required to take 30 credits of continuing education every 2 years to maintain our NYSOFSDC License, ensuring that they are informed in the latest methodologies and concepts in education. Additionally our teachers are all CPR/First Aid trained and certified.

Our integrated program serves as a vehicle for fun and wonderment. We celebrate Shabbat each week with songs, candle lighting, grape juice and challah. The holidays are celebrated with Hebrew songs and dance, art experiences, stories and of course, food. We do Hebrew Through Movement with our yoga teacher, and inculcate a love of Israel throughout. We weave Jewish values into every part of the curriculum, and do numerous tzedakah projects, social action projects, to plant the seed of social responsibility that we hope will continue to grow with the children into adulthood. Bringing our past and present together in a way that makes sense and is understandable to even the youngest child is one of our most important goals.

Each child is an individual, learning on many levels at his/her own pace…the pace is up to them. We are here to assure that the growth steps are positive and balanced. Both parent and child should take the time to enjoy the process…the results will come. To that end, we are looking forward to an exciting, fun-filled year with you and your child.
